Bear Creek, Alaska
I awoke at first light, in an axe-hewn log cabin…
…and I flung the cabin’s front door open wide to take in what had been promised as a wild and wonderful scene: Bear Creek, on the Kenai Peninsula.
There are many tributaries where mature salmon swim upstream to spawn.. but none more beautiful than this. Mountains, water, wildlife. I decided I’d hike to the foot of the mountain just beyond the creek (after coffee… now, where did I put it? I confess to always bringing my own.)
Hiking, of course, left me hungry. The cabin’s owner kindly invited me to join her for the lunch she was already preparing when I returned from my hike. It was the freshest of fresh salmon, ground and skillet cooked over a wood fire. Moist, delicious, rich. Mmmmm… that gives me an idea.
